5 Spring Lawn Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
Spring is the most important season for your lawn. What you do in March and April sets up the whole year. Here are the five mistakes we see most โ and the easy fixes.
1. Scalping the First Mow
After a long winter, it's tempting to cut it all off at once. Don't. Cutting more than one-third of the blade shocks the grass and invites weeds. Raise your mower one notch for the first two cuts, then step down gradually.
2. Watering Too Much, Too Early
Spring soil is usually still damp. Overwatering now causes shallow roots that die in summer heat. Water deeply but infrequently โ about one inch per week, including rainfall.
3. Skipping the Soil Test
Guessing at fertilizer is guessing at your lawn's health. A $15 soil test tells you exactly what your yard needs. We test every new client's soil before recommending a plan.
4. Ignoring Bare Spots
Bare patches in spring become weed patches by June. Overseed bare spots early, keep them moist, and they'll fill in before summer.
5. Mowing With a Dull Blade
A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it, leaving ragged tips that turn brown. Sharpen your blade at least twice a season โ or let us handle it.
